Huh. Here I thought I'd got over being put off by 20-year age differences (case usually in point, Severus/Harry), or at least was consistently able to handwave it as "age difference alone is kind of the least of the issues here". But guess what? Bring a 19-year-old Lily forward in time to a nearly 38-year-old Severus, and lo and behold, I am back to not being able to stomach it. Weird.

In my great trawling search on DeviantArt (I'm somewhere in the high 15000s of 27000 results sorted by reverse date! woo!), I often come across Severus/Hermione art where Hermione's hair colour, rather than straight up brown, sure looks awfully red in tone.

Somehow, I can't bring myself to be annoyed by that...

Summary: Lily shares some of her young sexual curiosity with Severus, but that may not have been the best idea.
Author's Notes: Request was for "whatif!scenarios, pre-Hogwarts, angst, hurt/comfort, unrequited love". Sort-of-three out of five ain't bad? I think it's at least ambiguous whether it's requited love or not, and there's angst at the end. AU: Severus and Lily didn't grow apart and then crash and burn they way they did in canon. They are still quite good friends in the summer after sixth year. Thanks to my betas who_la_hoop and juniperus.

Lilies Are Red, Roses Are Blue
Rating: NC-17 (barely)
Words: ~5,500
Warnings: Sexual activity between teenagers (who are of age in their jurisdiction); gratuitous ignoring of canon; fluff; extreme sappiness; Severus being too pretty; no nutritional value.
Summary: Best friends? Maybe so, but clearly there have been some other thoughts occurring on both sides as well.
Author's Notes: Request was for Marauder era, shy Snape, long hair, awkwardness, first time having sex/kissing/etc (but no PWP), fluff, and preferably above PG-13. Wa-hey, I think I might have ticked most of those boxes.

aaand... I've just now noticed I didn't thank my betas on that one. Wow. Let's see, that would have been spidermoth and... um... oh crap. Once these were posted I deleted all the betaing emails. Now it's totally escaped me. Um. Pipe up, and I'll add in a thank-you note? (I can't believe I've forgotten this; now I feel like a heel... :( )

Call of the Dark

Warnings: Some purple prose, brief drug use, slight dub-con (but see rating; no sex).
Summary: Severus has learned that Dark magic can burn away his imperfections, but can he convince Lily to see it his way?
Author's Notes: Request included plot, angst, dark, after Hogwarts, Lily not returning and/or playing with Severus's feelings, and Severus as "a flesh and blood person: desires, ambitions, complexes, weaknesses but also brains". Thanks to my betas hobgoblinn and lilyevans_snape, who did record-breaking turnaround time on this.

All three of these are pinch-hits, which means they were written under some duress, so please to excuse their not being the greatest things ever. The last one especially was squeezed out in about two days.

I'm still startled that I wrote over 14,000 words of fic for an exchange I never signed up for in the first place. Between that and all that Snack blither I tried to do for drachenmina that means I've written something like 23,000 words in a little over a month's time. O.o (Still, that ain't hacking NaNoWriMo. ;) )

Fic art, Snape/Lily, by winkout
A series of four illustrations for a fic on FFN called Lily's Charm. Someone remarked in the comments that one thing that makes these so great is the body language, and that's spot-on. The sparse colour palette (black/white/grey and a kind of ochre/tan colour) is very nice too; lends them a kind of "sepiatone" quality. My favourite is the third one, where it looks like Lily's just told Severus that they're going to have a son. The way he's holding her body against his and the gentle expression on his face (eyes closed, even) are just amazing.

For a photomanip of one of the promo shots of Rickman!Snape, this is really impressive. The nose and chin are not really what I see in my own head, but the way it is so totally not Alan Rickman anymore is very cool.

Lily's Kiss, by sympatex
I'd have called this "Severus's Kiss", personally, because he looks like the instigator here. ;) Kissing is very hard to draw, and usually even when well-done I get a kind of "does it really look like that?" kind of feeling. I don't get that at all from this one. The spot where their mouths meet is just perfect.

Severus Snape - The Repentant, by panatenshi
Woobie!Severus ahoy, including big anime eyes, although he's far from bishie. I'm not sure how old he's supposed to be here; I picture it as ca. 1980. He looks so sad and lonely, and I like the gloomy green and black of the background. Also, I think I have a new fetish: Severus wearing black gloves, as he seems to be doing here.

Very quick little sketch; feels "fast" to me, like it was just meant to capture a tiny little moment of expression. Possibly a tad too pretty, but those are what I call some "curtains" of hair!

Long (tall) illustration of the scene in "The Prince's Tale" where Severus is wailing about "I thought you were going to keep her safe" and Dumbles says "oh, but her son survives". I'm not sure why this artist does Severus with only about cheek-length hair (she does it in other works too), and he looks older to me than the 21 years he should be here, but his facial expressions and body language are great.

Why Summer Orchids Wither

This 9600-word fic is a little hard to classify, as you can see in the subject. Lily's been hit with a curse that makes her lose some of her recent memory. She doesn't know why she and Severus are no longer friends, or how she got engaged to James. So she calls on Severus to help her out with it, since she figures her best friend (as she still remembers him) would know, and as he works out a cure for her, things go from there.

This is one of those fics that pulls the rug out from under you. There's such tenderness and love and you glow with what's happening to Severus and Lily and then wham, the end just breaks your heart. My reaction when I first read this fic about three weeks ago was to want to scream out loud. "You bitch, you bitch, how could you do that!!!1!1!" Someone commented on another fic in the exchange that it was a success because it had made her feel an emotion, and wow, did this ever do that for me.

The Place That August Brings

This is my second gift in the less_for_you exchange. (So I guess that gives away that I wrote two fics for it -- insert guesses here. I think I totally fail at anon, but perhaps others are not familiar enough with me to recognize what I see as a blindingly obvious prose and, especially, punctuation style.) Here slightly-edited is the comment I left:

I posted about this when I saw it in the mod journal on the 13th. At the time I was hard-pressed to describe how it made me feel except by writing extemporaneous poetry:

it is October, and dark too soon
in the dregs at the bottom
of that barrel called summer.
the breeze from the window
was warmer at first, and now
too chill too fast after sunset;
but it is this faded photograph
and not that wandering wind
that's set a shiver in my skin.

I enthusiastically adopted this out of the exchange orphans because I loved it so much. I adore the sort of fairy-tale quality to it; it's got hints of a kind of Charles de Lint - urban fantasy thing going on. I feel like I'm looking at a dusty abandoned playground, listening to a tale being told to me by an old woman who once played there, and seeing and hearing ghosts of the children she's telling me about. It also reminds me of finding hidden places on the grounds of the summer camp I used to go to as a girl, and all the magic stories we used to cook up about them.

For the header art, I think I like Lily best, the shape of her hair and the bright contrast of the color with the blue of her top. Severus's patched clothes are cute too!

This fic packs a lot into its 2000 words. Go thou and read, but not too fast (says she of the 300-400 wpm) -- let it creep in your mind like a mist.

If you like Severus/Lily and you do not go read (I know who and you don't, ha ha)'s less_for_you gift for xnymphadorax, A Man's Greatest Treasure, like, right now, then it shall be twenty lashes with a wet noodle! Ve haff vays of dealing with people like you!

It's simply a lovely piece of work. 9k, NC-17 although a good deal of it is below that rating. And the sex is lurvely, don't get me wrong. Sweet and hot and tender. But there's so much else to recommend it too. This is the one I said a while ago, "Oh my, you quoted Rumi; I think I kind of love you right now". It's told in a series of small episodes, one from each year. The build is slow and makes me smile and contains "I can't quite believe you love me" on both sides of the game. If you don't like some level of fluff this may not be the story for you, I suppose, but then WHAT KIND OF FREAK ARE YOU ANYWAY ahem.

You already know I love this story to bits. Their relationship is so beautiful and the sex at the end is so wonderful and I adore that Severus comes too soon and man I just have the biggest weak spot for fic where Severus is loved and wanted and grraaaaahhhhh.

Hm, maybe I can be my own pinch-hitter as well. No harm in having a safety cushion. Turns out I had a suitable bunny in cold storage. (What? Don't you refrigerate yours?) Trying to walk a tightrope between two sets of requests, so as to come up with something that could fall either way, is pretty tricky, but I've got 2200 words of it already. That's more than I'd need to do in a day if this were NaNoWriMo. :P

Argh. We're going to need at least two pinch-hits for less_for_you, and that's only if orpheus_samhain accepts my suggested squeezings of two existing gifts to fit the requests of people they were not originally written for, which itself leaves two gifts floating in the ether with no recipients. If not, we're going to need as many as four pinch hits. Augh! Augh I say!
