alwaysasnapefan: Altogether Success

Not a bad birthday. It's wet, but not really raining, which I think is gorgeous and really brings out any area. I'm on my period, which is good in my case because it makes me happier. I took my meds for the first time in a week or so. The cafeteria listened to my comment card and put out a couple non-sugar cereals for this morning! Dad and Bitty are headed here, I wrote a fic(let), I joined piratesonline.com and have been playing it, and I'm assuming my ab machine came in the mail (my present). ETA: Also, my animal crackers are not stale! Yum! (2 pound bag. I think I've had them since like the 10th. What an amazing chip clip!) Fri, Sep. 5th, 2008, 03:12 pm

celandineb: PSA for the academic types who read HP
hp_grad is a community for both current and former grad students who also happen to be Harry Potter fen - so it's open to profs, too, in all disciplines, and anywhere in the world. Medical students, law students - anyone working on or who has finished an advanced degree of some ilk is welcome. Even if you're no longer an active student, you can contribute to discussions, dispensing advice on ways you found worked in the great school-life balancing act. The mods are magnetic_pole and snegurochka_lee; the community hasn't been tremendously active for a while, but they're trying to revitalize it and Maggie has set up a post for folks to introduce themselves today. Go, join, say hello!

iamisaac: Summersmut Recs

Okay, I am continuing with the reccing things on a slightly more regular basis. So this time it's Anthony Goldstein/Percy Weasley - which is not something I ever anticipated reccing, I'll be honest. Mention of religion, which may offend some, but... Just beautifully written. Here http://asylums.insanejournal.com/hp_summersmut/44602.htmlETAI know that loads of people go away in summer, and this is BY NO MEANS aimed at the person this particular fic was written for, but I've been reading as much of hp_summersmut as I can, and one thing that has REALLY disappointed me is the amount of people who haven't commented on fics written specifically for them. Surely they can't ALL have hated what was written for them, but have they just not checked the community, or did they not bother to leave a comment, or...? They can't ALL be away, surely?

magnetic_pole: Back-to-school...

Just a quick announcement for those of us who are headed back to school ourselves this fall: hp_gradover on LJ is up and running again with an introductory post today. This comm has been around for two years, but quite a few of us have graduated or returned to grad school since we last introduced ourselves. Stop by and meet others in the same boat--faced with classes, readings, oral exams, labs, dissertations, conferences, applications, and late nights--all the while wishing we had a little more time for fandom. We'll have discussions and polls throughout the year, and you're always welcome to stop by and post about the trials and tribulations--and joys!--of academic life. Everyone's welcome--past, present, and future grad students from all disciplines. Hope to see you there! Fri, Sep. 5th, 2008, 04:25 pm
weis posting in snapedom: Who is more guilty in situation at Srieking Shack?

Hello! Dear readers, there is very intensive discussion at one of Russian forums about situation in the Shrieking Shack and I would like to know what you people think about that matter too. I was afraid to ask it here but sylvanawood encouraged me. The matter of discussion is - whether or not the guilt for situation at Srieking Shack was equally shared by Sirius and Severus. I mean – when Sirius baited Snape to go there after Remus in their fifth year. Some of our readers say that it was mostly Sirius’ guilt – as said in canon, Sirius thought it would be amusing, to tell Snape all he had to do was prod the knot on the tree trunk with a long stick, and he'd be able to get in after Remus. And later Sirius doesn’t show any sight of remorse and that entire situation regarded as cruel joke (“Serves him right” – he says to Harry in PoA). Others think that it was a murder attempt – sudden and unplanned, but Sirius’ intention for Snape to get harm was very clear. Many think that it was entirely Snape’ fault and that he shouldn’t take obvious bait. So, what do you think? Was there equal guilt? Was it unplanned murder attempt? Should Sirius apologize? Can we say that foolish curiosity of youth and blatant disregard of somebody’s life or health are traits of the same range? I must confess, I don’t think that such cruel joke can be regarded just as joke. I think this is much more dangerous thing. And other questions, related with that situation – why Dumbledore forbade Severus to talk about it? What he was afraid of? Was he concerned about Gryffindor werewolf or was he not concerned enough about lone Slytherin? What if situation was reversed and it was Snape making bait and somebody from Slytherin saved one of Marauders – can we say that situation would be different? And if Severus had normal parents, concerned about his well-being, could that situation end differently? Would he forbidden to speak about it in that case? If your child/relative was victim of such joke and prohibition, what would you do? Fri, Sep. 5th, 2008, 04:11 am
severity_softly: It's a shame I deleted my "all the cool kids have insomnia" icon...
(*cough* that title is a lot more appropriate on lj)It's about 4:10 in the AM. I spent three hours trying to sleep, and got nowhere, and now I've been up for over an hour and I'm not tired yet. So I'm sitting here, not sleeping, and not fully awake. All my knitting things are in the bedroom and I'd wake the husband digging for them. (I started a new scarf in autumny colors, and am experimenting in embellishing a little bit with a few beads. Scarf is pretty--thick rusty orange yarn knitted together with thick grey/green/brown yarn--but I'm not sold on the beaded parts yet.) There's shit on TV and my CM dvds are also in the bedroom. I don't feel like watching much else. Maybe Spaced. Ah, fuck it. I think I might try forcing a few words of fic out, and we'll see how loopy and strange it is tomorrow morning/afternoon. Or I guess that would be later this morning/afternoon. *sigh* Oh, this is ridiculous. My cat is snoring extra loudly. I think he's mocking me. Good thing I don't work tomorrow. I'd normally be getting up about two hours from now.

I wrote about Eileen earlier this year and became quite attached to her, and she has continued to grow more vivid. I was intrigued that she had a brother. What was he like? And I could imagine the matriarch Madame Prince, disapproving of Eileen's marriage but insisting that her grandson was properly brought up. Tobias was not even invited, *g*. auctasinistra: Not exactly a rec ...

... really more an observation. I've made it (to myself) many times over the last couple of years, and I thought I'd put it out there to see what other people think. It starts like this. Unlike, apparently, everyone else in the world of Snarry, my favorite fic by dementordelta is "Anybody Else." No one seems to pick that one, and I love it to pieces. The reason I love it to pieces is the darkness she explores in it. Delta tends not to go dark in her work (that's not a complaint!), but this story touches on a genuinely disturbed Snape and I found that that aspect of the story, very particularly, just delved into my heart and set up a special place. It is (I think) different from most of her oeuvre in that way (even the beautiful and slightly sad "Dreaming Spires"), and although I love all her stories, to me, this one is the best, and that is the reason. I don't know if it's because she generally doesn't do that that it resonates so strongly in that story, or because she did it so buggerin' well (and maybe I wish she did more angsty stuff *g*) ... but there you go. As ever, any comment/opinion is welcome. EDIT (duh): And if you haven't read it (why?), here: Anybody Else

Turns out Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech did not just electrify the Republican faithful inside the Xcel Energy Center Wednesday night.
Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is reporting that it has taken in $8 million over the Internet since Mrs. Palin’s speech, in which she tore into Mr. Obama.
By Thursday afternoon, more than 130,000 donors had kicked in, and the Obama campaign is on pace to collect $10 million by the time Senator John McCain takes the stage tonight. ( Read more... )

thesnapelyone:

My pinkie is still stiff, but I can curl it again. I still can not really do that reach to the right for commas/apostraphies however. Brought sis home for layover until mum got home to take her to the place she is staying, so I showed off the Tepes grumpy!hat, which has yet to be blocked. I discovered, after painstakingly stitching about ten spikes with a yarn needle, that crocheting them into place goes a lot faster and looks neater, so I may re-do the spikes, oh yay. Not that I really want to, but if it will look nicer, I may make myself. I have got to do something, because I have not been knitting in order to allow my hand time to heal, and it is just killing me to not knit. It is like telling Severus he can not brew potions. That bad. I keep putting on the grumpy!hat and screaming in front of a mirror. It helps. Some. Also, for some reason I can not fathom, if I have to switch needle sizes called for to get gauge on a knitting project, and do the gauge swatch and everything, my actual project's gauge is always off.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Rana at Terminus. In Potterdom she's know as chibitoaster on Live Journal and littleblackbow on Insane Journal. She's definitely a jill-of-all-trades, writing, cosplaying (her Lockhart is aces, man *G*) and arting her way through fandom. In the spirit of art reccing, I wanted to do an 'Artist Spotlight' on Rana so that others could familiarise themselves with her work. I know that I've recced several of her Snape pieces, but even I was pleasantly surprised to find out she draws Harry/Draco and a host of other pairings, too. So without further adieu, I bring you a sampling of Rana's art. And if you love her work as much as I do, don't be shy. Stop by her journals and tell her so! I've received 20 entries in the first four days of the Harry Potter Random Facts Fest! That's an excellent average, and I'm really pleased by the variety of the entries. Keep 'em coming! Note that yes, you may submit an entry about a character that someone else has already written about, and it doesn't matter where you journal: anonymous comments are allowed in the fest's informational post; just let me know who you wrote about and where you've publicly posted the entry, and I'll list it. I've noticed, however, that anonymous comments and comments made by people using OpenID aren't being forwarded to me, so I've started scanning the post instead of relying on comment notifications. If it takes me a while to list your entry, it's because I missed your comment, but I am looking at the post now. *kicks IJ*

lesyeuxverts: Thank you all *so* much!

Thank you all for the good wishes - I had a completely fabulous birthday! In addition to the Labor Day fandomy barbeque and party the day before ... I had cake&ice cream for breakfast, my coworkers bought me beer (Blue Moon, <3), my roommates and I went out for dinner (this place with AWESOME nachos), and then we watched a movie together (Drop Dead Gorgeous). nqdonne bought me a cake from Finale and (after we'd finished off the Pimms and the other drinky drinks we had), mixed me a Galliano (SO good, OMG!). In addition to the yummy food and drink, there was also fandom awesomeness: angela_snape wrote Initiation (Snape/Bill, R and soooo very hot) for me; alisanne wrote Test Kisses (Drapery, my OT3, eeee! and delightfully NC-17); and nqdonne posted her Percy/Teddy, Percy/Harry fic The Prime of Mister Percy Weasley (soooo NC-17 and delightfully porny) in honor of my birthday! Check the warnings, because Teddy's underage, but ... omg! Such a great fic, you really must hurry to read it! Continuing with the cross-gen goodness, my fall_fantasia gift was posted! The Best (Percy/Scorpius, R) ... and it is really awesome! Scorpius is just delightful and Percy's perfect, and just ... guh! It's amazing! So yes ... thank you all SO MUCH for making my birthday wonderful! (Especially those of you who assured me that I can be 25 for AS LONG AS I WANT, heee!)

lore: First-Lines meme....
I'd seen this meme around and decide to look myself over: Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern.Right off the bat, I was disturbed that I had to go back to the start of 2007 to get 25 first-lines, especially considering how many of these are drabbles or ficlets. Oy! ( First lines )Observations: I like a good curse word or two to open a fic.
I write from Remus' PoV (or Remus-like characters) more often than I thought. I think that's because I know what's going on in Severus' head (or Severus-like characters) and I want to find out what Remus is thinking.
I'm either pithy or long-winded to start.
I like a strong opening image.

Anyone interested in telling me about your feelings about cross gen fics? I am always surprised when I see people say they hate it. What about it is unappealing? What even makes a cross gen pairing? ( gryffindorj and I each held a different opinion of how long a generation was then looked it up and got a third answer.) Aren't Bill and Tonks for example about halfway between Harry's and the Marauders's generation-so where do they fit in? Also for people that love cross gen, why? What's the appeal that isn't there in another sort of fic? ETA: Let me say, I don't mean to raise the question of chan here. So let's assume the cross gen occurs between two adults.

Once more unto the book, dear friends, once more; Now mark the page up with our English words. In lulls there's nothing becomes a writer As modest stillness and humility: But when the novel call blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd ink; Then lend the pen a terrible aspect; Let pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the word o'erwhelm it As fearfully as doth bad metaphor O'erhang and shadow its intended thought, Swill'd with the wild and wasteful word. Now set the start and stretch the keyboard wide, Hold hard the breath and bend up every writer To their full plot. On, on, noblest novelist. Whose blood is fet from fathers of literature! Fathers that, like so many Asimovs, Have in these parts from morn till even writ Then sheathed their pens for lack of argument: Dishonour not your keyboards; now attest That those whom you took as models did beget you. Be example now to those of grosser blood, And teach them how to write. And you, good yeoman, Whose pens were dipped in ink, show us here The mettle of your writing; let us swear That you are worth your paper; which I doubt not; For there is none of you so mean and base, That hath not vital story in your heart. I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry 'God for story, pen, and written word!'
