Ack. Note to self: MUST GET GOING ON SNAPEDOM SUMMER FEST FIC. Maybe having Fridays off this summer will help. I've been woefully drifting on the plot-bunny failboat here. :-/

This is a non-anonymous exchange and the two of the three drawings I could write stories for that were in fests have been revealed, so... any ideas, anyone?

Severus helps Draco brew Elixir of Euphoria (gen, G)
Last Kiss (Severus/Lily, G)
Beltane Rite (Severus/Harry with Draco; NC-17/NWS)

edit: Oh good god. [info]geri_chan wrote ~20,000 words for hers and posted it already (this is the 1/3 of the way through a post-whenever-you're-done kind of schedule). I am SO going to be made of fail.

Happy birthday, [info]juniperus!

My icon Severus applauds you.

Stowing this for future use. [info]ariadneelda says:

Oh, and this: "Why couldn't Black have hidden in Snape's office, eh? He could have finished him off for us!" (Ron after Snape gave him a nasty detention. PoA, Grim Defeat chapter.)

Please tell me there's fic out there for that! It could be an excellent Snack. :D

Scored hardcover first (American) editions of the first three books today at a used bookstore, so now I have a complete set of all seven. Yay! My trade paperbacks were getting a little worse for wear, despite careful handling. They look so pretty in a row on the bookshelf. If that fancy potion book from Xoanon (which has been delayed until August, grr) is book porn, then this is at least book necking in a movie theater.

Happy birthday, [info]torino10154 (who I know isn't seeing this) and [info]logospilgrim!

Dudes, check out the awesome little comment ficlet [info]kerrisokol wrote for me on my latest summaries post!

Happy birthday, [info]speed_demon77!

Sorry I no has present. :( You can try leaving me a prompt, although short notice isn't always the best conditions for me. (shh, I know I knocked out a lot of words lately, but somehow it's not the same.)

it's time for some summaries!

One shot Coming of age tale involving Weasley and Snape. Some magic, very foul language....

Some magic? I guess that's reasonable. It's only a Harry Potter fanfic, after all. Wouldn't want to put too much magic in.

...My best story yet.

Oh dear.

Let me say that again, in case it wasn't clear enough: Oh dear.

I sent this one to [info]babb_chronicles, so I'll be doing this again, but I just can't resist sharing some of these absolutely, um, lovely lines: Read more... )

---

Harry Potter runs for school board under a strange platform.

Looks like Harry's been starting the post-election celebration a little early.

---

One-shot Hermione has a question for the Potions Professor but when she goes to look for him she is met with a very interesting surprise.

Turns out he's been doing naughty things with One-trick Harry and Ronnie One-note.

---

A scene of lust between none other than Snape and Hermione. This is a scene that will be placed into a story I am writing, at a later date. But enjoy for now. THIS IS AN EXPLICIT PIECE OF WORK - MA ONLY!

Wow, you're brave. I'd never show my explicit fanfic to my mother.

---

(this one could be a lot worse, although it includes some amusing misused words, like Hermione wearing a violet "brazier" and stuffing books into her "back".)

Hermione has a detention with Snape that explodes, and ends up becoming more than either of them bargained for, though not what they didn’t all-ready want.

Oooh, bad luck, Granger. Most of your incarnations get detentions with non-exploding Snapes. I imagine you certainly didn't bargain for becoming basically a red stain smeared across the walls of the dungeon.

Someone left a review for Care and Feeding of Severus Snape on FFN saying that they were thinking of a spinoff. Here it is (still in progress):

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4347376/1/Getting_My_Very_Own_Severus_Snape

It's a little rough I think, but it's silly and fun, and it's flattering to have someone want to do this.

What if a friend buys a Sirius Black model and wants to introduce him to Snape?
If you enjoy violence and war and pain then by all means introduce them.

XD

Just stowing this here for future reference. This is from an FFN review on "Summer Shade".

Honey, I think you just gave us ALL masterbation material for ions [sic]. Maybe you
could do another chapter of Sev for that? [...] I always thought if James had lost his virginity to some other girl during the Lily-hates-him-days then Lily would feel fine losing hers to Severus since James hadn't waited for her.

Here's another angle on that whole doe Patronus business, taken shamelessly (but with permission) from a (locked) post by [info]lupabitch who was talking about actual animal totems:

I don't get why Deer is always associated with gentleness. You don't want to fuck with a deer. Especially a buck at rutting season. And if you're taking "Deer" in a broader sense to mean the entire family, just consider the red deer, the elk, and the moose. Antlers are wicked weapons, and all deer have sharp hooves.

Lots of animals are gentle with their young. Lots of tame or domestic animals can learn to be gentle with humans. But I'm not sure there's any wild animal that's so gentle that it wouldn't bite, kick, or sting the crap out of you if you threatened hir.

my [info]less_for_you fics

[info]less_for_you reveals are up. Here are the three fics I wrote (author's notes slightly edited):

Summer Shade
Rating: R
Words: ~5,000
Warnings: None
Summary: Lily shares some of her young sexual curiosity with Severus, but that may not have been the best idea.
Author's Notes: Request was for "whatif!scenarios, pre-Hogwarts, angst, hurt/comfort, unrequited love". Sort-of-three out of five ain't bad? I think it's at least ambiguous whether it's requited love or not, and there's angst at the end. AU: Severus and Lily didn't grow apart and then crash and burn they way they did in canon. They are still quite good friends in the summer after sixth year. Thanks to my betas [info]who_la_hoop and [info]juniperus.

Lilies Are Red, Roses Are Blue
Rating: NC-17 (barely)
Words: ~5,500
Warnings: Sexual activity between teenagers (who are of age in their jurisdiction); gratuitous ignoring of canon; fluff; extreme sappiness; Severus being too pretty; no nutritional value.
Summary: Best friends? Maybe so, but clearly there have been some other thoughts occurring on both sides as well.
Author's Notes: Request was for Marauder era, shy Snape, long hair, awkwardness, first time having sex/kissing/etc (but no PWP), fluff, and preferably above PG-13. Wa-hey, I think I might have ticked most of those boxes.

aaand... I've just now noticed I didn't thank my betas on that one. Wow. Let's see, that would have been [info]spidermoth and... um... oh crap. Once these were posted I deleted all the betaing emails. Now it's totally escaped me. Um. Pipe up, and I'll add in a thank-you note? (I can't believe I've forgotten this; now I feel like a heel... :( )

Call of the Dark
Rating: R
Words: ~3,800
Warnings: Some purple prose, brief drug use, slight dub-con (but see rating; no sex).
Summary: Severus has learned that Dark magic can burn away his imperfections, but can he convince Lily to see it his way?
Author's Notes: Request included plot, angst, dark, after Hogwarts, Lily not returning and/or playing with Severus's feelings, and Severus as "a flesh and blood person: desires, ambitions, complexes, weaknesses but also brains". Thanks to my betas [info]hobgoblinn and [info]lilyevans_snape, who did record-breaking turnaround time on this.

All three of these are pinch-hits, which means they were written under some duress, so please to excuse their not being the greatest things ever. The last one especially was squeezed out in about two days.

I'm still startled that I wrote over 14,000 words of fic for an exchange I never signed up for in the first place. Between that and all that Snack blither I tried to do for [info]drachenmina that means I've written something like 23,000 words in a little over a month's time. O.o (Still, that ain't hacking NaNoWriMo. ;) )

Wed, Jun. 25th, 2008, 02:17 pm

Argh. Y/N: It is silly to let comments on others' fics get me down when they praise a Severus that is the opposite of what I've written, and say "I'm so glad he's not [exactly what I wrote]", because what I wrote was that way because it was to someone else's order? Especially when the same person praised what I wrote as well (contradictory, that, but hey)?

I just get an "oh, man, I must have sucked then because I didn't do that, bah I'm so cliche, I'm writing the sort of Severus that annoys people" kind of feeling...

A link from snapedom: Really awesome post analyzing Severus's office in the films, including some links to other sites. Includes some alchemy geekery. (This is from Feb 2007 so I apologize if any of you have already seen it.)

[info]lunylucy has a Srs question for you all.

As I said in my comment: "Where was this guy when they were casting that dork in OotP?"

giant art rec post of doom (mostly gen, all rated G)

Fic art, Snape/Lily, by [info]winkout
A series of four illustrations for a fic on FFN called Lily's Charm. Someone remarked in the comments that one thing that makes these so great is the body language, and that's spot-on. The sparse colour palette (black/white/grey and a kind of ochre/tan colour) is very nice too; lends them a kind of "sepiatone" quality. My favourite is the third one, where it looks like Lily's just told Severus that they're going to have a son. The way he's holding her body against his and the gentle expression on his face (eyes closed, even) are just amazing.

Severus Snape, by thessaly
For a photomanip of one of the promo shots of Rickman!Snape, this is really impressive. The nose and chin are not really what I see in my own head, but the way it is so totally not Alan Rickman anymore is very cool.

Lily's Kiss, by sympatex
I'd have called this "Severus's Kiss", personally, because he looks like the instigator here. ;) Kissing is very hard to draw, and usually even when well-done I get a kind of "does it really look like that?" kind of feeling. I don't get that at all from this one. The spot where their mouths meet is just perfect.

Severus Snape - The Repentant, by panatenshi
Woobie!Severus ahoy, including big anime eyes, although he's far from bishie. I'm not sure how old he's supposed to be here; I picture it as ca. 1980. He looks so sad and lonely, and I like the gloomy green and black of the background. Also, I think I have a new fetish: Severus wearing black gloves, as he seems to be doing here.

Snivellus by ghn-hitokiri
Very quick little sketch; feels "fast" to me, like it was just meant to capture a tiny little moment of expression. Possibly a tad too pretty, but those are what I call some "curtains" of hair!

If you insist... by coNstantine2530
Long (tall) illustration of the scene in "The Prince's Tale" where Severus is wailing about "I thought you were going to keep her safe" and Dumbles says "oh, but her son survives". I'm not sure why this artist does Severus with only about cheek-length hair (she does it in other works too), and he looks older to me than the 21 years he should be here, but his facial expressions and body language are great.

Deatheaters by AcuteCat
Severus and Lucius posing their evol poses. Last one had hair too short? Well, here's too long. (And some unlikely clothing.) But I can't say I'm complaining. Extra-long hair is really rather flattering on him.

Grrr. I know InsaneJournal doesn't have LiveJournal's resources, but 25 total email subscriptions (which, by the way, things like "when someone comments in my journal" and "when InsaneJournal makes an announcement" count against) just is not enough. Even free users on LJ get a thousand subscriptions. I wanted to track comments on every post to [info]less_for_you and I keep bumping up against the ceiling trying to track even a handful of posts in [info]snapedom too. I simply ran out of slots -- I'm no longer tracking the earlier posts to [info]less_for_you, and tomorrow I'm going to have to give up another one of those, or else the earliest [info]snapedom one, which is only from this past weekend I think. Yarrr...

"mired in adolescence"

Reposted with permission from [info]atdelphi, from this thread in [info]persepolis130's journal. I just thought these were some really insightful comments:

Just chiming in as someone who likes to ship Snape with Dumbledore, Filch, McGonagall, Hagrid, or Slughorn. I had to fudge some of my answers - for instance, none of those listed pairings would make me spew, and none of the Lily options really described my view of the relationship (that is to say, looking at the character, I see a difference between how Snape would feel about Lily and how he would think he feels. To me, a defining point of the character is how his position at Hogwarts has kept him mired in his adolescence, living on grudges and wrongs, stunted emotionally and possessing a distorted self-awareness). In short, I think what he's in love with by the end of the series has more to do with ideals, guilt, himself, and lost opportunities than any real woman, but they all go by the name Lily. [emphasis mine]

I've always enjoyed the mirroring in PoA, where we see Snape and Sirius set up as the least mature adults in the series - Snape for his pettiness, Sirius for his recklessness, both for their obsession with the past - and you realise that just as Sirius is emotionally arrested at twenty-one from being locked away at that age, so is Snape. The presence of the Dementors at Hogwarts really needles in that image of Hogwarts as Snape's Azkaban, a place where he's forced to relive his unhappy memories. Then in HBP we get that chilling note of finding out why
[emphasis original] Snape keeps asking for the Defence position - because he knows that the Defence professor never comes back the next year.

FWIW what she says about "mirroring" with Sirius is one of the reasons I like to ship those two, actually. :)

So many people's lives seem to be getting so massively upset around me right now. Valued relationships ending, strife occurring, jobs lost, property wrecked. I only speak of the narrow window I have through my two LJ lists and IJ list, but still. I hope with all my heart that you will find respite from your sorrows very soon, grace and comfort for your hurts.

The Failure of the Snack

Bah. [info]drachenmina, I fail at birthday present. Between two attempts I've written nearly 10,000 words and it all just rambles and wanders and blithers and never fucking goes anywhere. There's some snappy lines but overall it's just so blah and contrived. So I give up. This is supposed to be fun, not brain surgery.

ETA: What is "fail" about these is not that they are bad (although they are rough and, obviously, not even complete narratives), but that neither attempt got anywhere near my goal of "ficlet for a birthday present".

Herewith I present what is basically one huge outtake:

Not-a-title: The Failure of the Snack (A Tragedy in Two Parts)
Pairing: Severus/Sirius
Rating: R
Warnings: Obviously, a lack of beta and lack of Britpick; *koff-koff* percent dumb-Yankee-trying-too-hard-with-the-Britishisms by volume; lack of originality (in the form of re-using a wrist grab from one fic in the other and talking about Severus being made of ice).

Fit the First: Sirius transforms to Padfoot for the first time, but he has a most undesirable witness to the occasion. )
Fit the Second: A Slug Club party is a detention? Sure it is, if you're Sirius Black. )
